WORKSHOPS & TRAININGS

We are committed to the healthy and holistic development of Black men, boys and their communities. We’ve developed culturally responsive workshops to equip boys of color, and the populationships who serve them, with tools to promote lifelong intellectual, social and emotional growth. We’ve included a sampling of our offerings below:

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE & COLLECTIVE ACCOUNTABILITY

Administrators and teachers have a limited number of options when it comes to assigning consequences for student disciplinary infractions, in addition, the cultural norm for correcting behavior is punitive. The Restorative Justice & Collective Accountability workshop is designed to teach students, teachers and other school staff how to shift punitive culture by identifying root causes, effects and solutions to behaviors that disrupt the community. The tools given focus on self-awareness, healing and conflict resolution.

CULTURALLY RELEVANT EDUCATION & SCHOOL CULTURE - TOOLS FOR EDUCATING, INSPIRING AND EMPOWERING BLACK & LATINO STUDENTS

Students of color are often burdened by a vast disconnect between their cultural experiences at home and their shared experiences at school. This can negatively impact their academic performance, self-perception, identity development and overall engagement. The Culturally Relevant Education & School Culture workshop is designed to address overt and implicit biases illuminated by educators, school culture or curricula. The facilitator will help school staff develop interpersonal awareness and sensitivities, understand the value of cultural knowledge, and master a set of skills that will catalyze cross-cultural dialogue inside and outside of the classroom. In addition we will discuss tools for how to make classrooms and schools more inclusive of the diverse students that we serve by honoring the whole-child and accepting cultural immersion as a means to develop student interest, engagement and self-confidence.

ANTI-BULLY TOOL KIT - PREVENTION, DIAGNOSIS AND INTERVENTION FOR PARENTS, TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS

Bullying and disproportionate minority contact (DMC) are emerging problems for school districts and juvenile justice systems across the nation. Therefore, the culture of bullying and group violence in schools needs to be addressed from a public health, education and criminal justice lens. The Anti-Bully Tool Kit is a comprehensive workshop designed to address patterns and cultures of violence in schools which also offers adult and peer stakeholders preventive strategies to diagnose and intervene when there are early signs of bullying inside or outside of the classroom.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. - BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS TO MANAGE CLASSROOMS

Students listen and respond to persons who they respect; however respect is not automatically attached to authoritative leadership. This workshop is designed to help teachers be proactive by giving them tools to be Relationships, Equality, Self-Awareness, Peace, Ettique, Collective Responsibility and Traditions that help build healthy relationships and cultural standard in the classroom.

THE TRIANGLE RESOLUTION: BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PARENTS, STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS

Often, schools/teachers are culturally detached, parents are disconnected and students are disengaged. The Triangle Resolution is designed to establish a foundation for relationship building in schools to foster effective practices for teachers to better understand how to engage their students, families, and greater community where they work. The workshop will highlight the ways teachers can better listen and respond to students qualitative data regarding homelife and work beyond the classroom to develop a strong rapport with students and their families.

FINDING SUCCESS AMIDST SUSPENSIONS

Often, the penalty for poor behavior is out of school suspension -- days or weeks where students are home unsupervised, fall behind in coursework and do not gain skills to address behaviors that resulted in their suspension. Other times, youth are given ineffective in-school suspensions that do no create opportunities for learning, reconciliation or growth. The Finding Success Amidst Suspensions workshop series offers school practitioners a series of developmental training designed to shift the culture of in-school suspensions centers (ISSC) to student success centers (SSC) that effectively address critical thinking and behavior patterns which prohibit students from achieving developmentally appropriate academic, social and emotional growth.
